The Website Maintenance Checklist We Actually Use

A practical, non-exhaustive checklist for keeping a business website healthy month to month.

7 min read

Content and business information

Confirm pricing, hours, and contact details are current. Check that recent promotions or announcements are live and past ones are removed. Review team and staff pages against who’s actually on the team today.

Technical health

Apply CMS, plugin, and dependency updates. Test that contact forms actually deliver submissions. Run a broken-link check across the main navigation and recent pages. Confirm the latest backup exists and is restorable, not just present.

Security

Check for outstanding security patches. Review who has admin access and remove anyone who shouldn’t. Confirm the SSL certificate is valid and not approaching expiry.

Performance and SEO

Spot-check page load times on mobile. Review Core Web Vitals if you have access to the data. Confirm new pages have basic metadata (title, description) set.

How often to run this

Content and business information: monthly at minimum, or immediately when something changes. Technical, security, and performance: monthly, on a fixed schedule rather than “when there’s time” — which, for most businesses, means never.
